Firefly Bicycles produces the most beautiful bicycles in the world. Tyler Evans is the co-founder and creative director behind their Boston-based operation and is responsible for their clean presentation and jaw-dropping craftsmanship.
So we sat down with Tyler for Low Impact Life No. 3 to learn more about how a master maker feels about the things that make up his day-to-day life and work.
What’s something you hate throwing away?
Trash bags. The bag itself. Things that are designed to be thrown away - I think I have a hard time with those sometimes
What is the most durable thing you own?
Probably my mountain bike. I have beat the piss out of it. Over and over again. It’s as good as new. Had it about 2 summers now. I could just throw it at wall as hard as I can and it would hurt the wall.
What three things you own shape your daily habits?
The big one isn’t a single thing but is my daily constitutional. It’s a term from old people. It’s the thing you do to try and stay fit and healthy. The idea of doing something every day for your health.
What’s your worst environmental bad habit, something you’d like to work harder on?
Probably driving. Gasoline and stuff. I got a truck and it’s kind of a necessity. I could get a more economical truck. As far as trucks go it’s pretty good. Having a business living through these terrible winters. And sometimes you have to take your fat bikes far away. Gotta get around.
Whats your biggest concern about our environment?
Everyday it’s something different. Today I read an article on overfishing and the intense scale at which animals are being pulled out of the ocean. And another one about stupid humans that like to go shoot things for no reason. Trophy hunting really bums me out. Anything that’s not regulated. Not all of it’s “environmental” but also it all kind of is. People make me more mad than anything else. It’s probably something to do with overpopulation.
What’s the best made thing you own?
Ummm.. I have the perfect spoon. I got two of them at a yard sale once and they’re just the perfect shape for me. I think they’re silver and from 1899.
What makes you feel good about a purchase?
I’d rather buy one nice pair of pants than five crappy ones. Same with a shirt or pair of shoes. Or a bike part. Things like that. Having a methodology towards your next purchase is cool.
